Wheat harvesting has started in Kanri, Umerkot, Pithoro and Samaru talukas of Umerkot district.
Large quantities of new wheat are coming into the market while new wheat is being sold at Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,100 per 40 kg. The government has fixed the official price of wheat at Rs 2,000 per quintal.
Agricultural experts say bumper wheat production is expected this year compared to last year, while yields per acre are also encouraging. It should be noted that with the arrival of new wheat in the market, the mafia has also become active in storing and transporting large quantities of wheat out of the district.
Dozens of trucks of wheat are being sent to Karachi daily. On the other hand, the Sindh government has not come up with any policy on wheat procurement and there is no sign of setting up government centers. Poor agricultural policies and delaying tactics of the government create a wheat and flour crisis in the province every year.
Instead of setting up procurement centers and providing bardana at the beginning of the wheat harvest, the government starts procurement by setting up government centers when 70 per cent of the wheat goes from the fields to eight or other provinces, but it is too late. ۔
