Paris / Pittsburgh: A joint team of French and American experts has succeeded in eradicating hardened bacteria by combining “bacteriophage virus” and an antibiotic.

The study, published in the latest issue of the research journal Disease Models and Mechanisms, is currently based on a small fish, the zebrafish.

It should be noted that the growing resistance of bacteria against antibiotics is becoming a serious problem which medical experts around the world are trying hard to solve.
During the experiments, experts from the University of Montpellier in France and the University of Pittsburgh in the United States infected the zebrafish with a hardened bacterium called Mycobacterium abscessus.

The bacterium causes severe damage to the human lungs, while antibiotics are also becoming ineffective against it.

Of the zebra fish that were given only antibiotics, only 40% recovered. Similarly, zebrafish that received only the “bacteriophage virus” had a recovery rate of about 40%.

However, zebrafish treated with antibiotics and bacteriophage viruses combined showed a recovery rate of up to 70%.

These experiments are of an early nature and will be performed on more animals in the next phase. If success is achieved at this stage, then the same experiments will be performed on humans, but on a limited scale.

Their scope will be expanded on the success of these limited human experiments and only after the success will this method of treatment become popular.

This whole process could take another seven to eight years, so a combination of bacteriophage virus and antibiotics cannot be expected to cure diseases immediately.
